The city's other attractions include country music revues like the Smoky Mountain Opry, dinner theaters such as Dolly Parton's Dixie Stampede and outlet malls.
Lonnie's goal is to make the Shroud available to the million tourists that visit the area each year. We hope to include a more in-depth story and photographs in a future update.
In our January website update we introduced the Shroud Billboard Project, modeled on a project by an organization in Dublin, Ireland that published billboards of the Shroud face without any accompanying text or verbiage and created quite a strong public reaction.
I was contacted by Val Kelly , who, with her small prayer group in South Carolina, wanted to duplicate the idea near her home in Hilton Head and asked me what it would take to obtain an image for that purpose.
I liked the idea of a Shroud image without any text since each person who saw it would have to think about it and ultimately decide what it meant for themselves.
I provided the image and Val and her prayer group funded the production of a test billboard that has remained in place ever since. You can read more about it and get all the details of the original project at the above link.
Recently, Val contacted me again with an update on the project, which is making some serious progress. The Holy Face Project has established The Holy Face Project Fund in partnership with the Community Foundation of the Lowcountry , a c 3 non-profit organization, so they can raise funds for additional billboards.

Val also sent us a more recent photograph of the current billboard, which we have included above. I first started working with the Vancouver Shroud Association VSA in , when the then newly-formed organization contacted me to help design their new Man of the Shroud traveling exhibit.
For several months I worked with their exhibit designer who also happened to curate a museum in Vancouver , and provided images and written materials for the thirty museum boards that would become part of the final exhibit.
Since then, the exhibit has traveled and been hosted at parishes in many provinces across Canada. I have continued to work with them to help keep the exhibit up-to-date and several years ago became a member of their Board of Directors.
I travel to Canada at least once each year to make presentations around the exhibit I spoke in Calgary earlier this year and at a recent Board Meeting the Directors of the VSA agreed to expand the scope of the exhibit by accepting invitations from the United States for the first time.
This museum quality display includes a life size Enrie photographic replica of the Shroud of Turin, a specially designed display easel for positioning the Shroud replica above an altar; replicas of Christ's Passion and the Sudarium of Oviedo and 30 panels with text and color images relating to the history, science and significance of the Shroud of Turin.

Board accepted the retirement and emeritus status of Board member Joan Rogers , who will continue to remain available for consultations if needed.
This created the need to select and approve a new Board member to take her place. In evaluating potential candidates, one name came to mind immediately, and I recommended Raymond Schneider to fill the position.
For those who might not know Ray, he is Professor Emeritus of Mathematics and Information Technology at Bridgewater College, a contributing member of the online Shroud Science Group and a highly respected Shroud scholar.

The paper outlines the methodology applied by a multi-disciplinary team while lighting the Shroud of Turin at its last public exhibition in The methodology considered the special requirements of the Shroud, including exposure to ultraviolet light, while providing appropriate display conditions that would meet audience expectations.
The desired appearance readability of the body image and color was defined with the help of Shroud researchers and confirmed by subjective tests, while appropriate light levels for preservation were set in agreement with standard requirements and using knowledge of the degradation of linen in visible and UV light.
The installation provided a controlled environment and a managed visitor route to the Shroud, assuring excellent perception of both details and color, with the lowest illuminance level about 15 lx.

To date, just few hypotheses have been tested experimentally, and the results are debatable. In this paper we test the strength of two hypotheses namely, the presence of carboxyhemoglobin and the long term influence of ultraviolet light on high bilirubin blood by the spectral reflectance of the blood stain regions on the Shroud and by color analyses of ultraviolet irradiated high bilirubin blood stains on linen.
The relevance of these simple methods to the study of stained textiles is discussed. On a final and rather disappointing note, I have to report that a paper we linked to in our October update has been retracted by the journal in which it was published.
This is a rare occurence and even more rare is the fact that the retraction came a year after the paper was published. Unfortunately, this casts a shadow over all Shroud science and demonstrates the need to always adhere to the highest scientific standards in our work.

I received an e-mail from avowed Shroud skeptic Colin Berry on May 30, , which included a link to a compilation web page of his research on the Shroud.
Frankly, I did not respond to his e-mail nor did I include the link in our June 21, website update. Shortly thereafter, I received a comment from and had a written exchange with David Goulet , one of our viewers on our Facebook page.

However I would like to recommend that, perhaps at next update, you give a nod to Colin Berry's website and ongoing experiments that provide a possible man-made narrative for the Shroud.
I know Colin is not the most popular Shroud investigator but his research is compelling. His is, imo, the one non-authentic hypothesis that bears serious consideration.
If reason is to serve faith, then we must challenge our assumptions and Colin's site is a place to do that.
To ignore the incredible amount of scientific modelling and research he has undertaken would be a disservice to the Shroud.
However, Colin didn't win himself any friends by launching unprovoked ad hominem personal attacks against other researchers including me on a regular basis when Dan Porter's blog was still active.
Disagreeing with a researcher's conclusions or results is how science advances and is perfectly acceptable, but personal attacks, particularly on deceased researchers who are no longer alive to defend themselves, crosses the line.
Sadly, Colin crossed that line regularly. David Goulet - Acknowledged and I appreciate the reticence given his antagonism. My main concern though is that regardless of Colin's demeanor his science modelling continues to be compelling and innovative.
There may be aspects of his work that may even provide insights for pro-authentic researchers - for those with the patience to sift through his site and deal with his truculence.
May I quote this exchange? You made a convincing argument and I'd like to publish it with the link. I always write this section as I am completing one of our website updates, so I am never really sure when the next update will go online.

Sorry for the very long silence, as it has been a full six months since our last website update. Our major computer crash in January was immediately followed by the busiest travel and lecture schedule I have had in years.
Needless to say, that put me far behind in everything, including updating this site, so your patience is appreciated. There is a huge backlog of material that I have included in this update, so let's get started. The above never-before published photograph was taken at the press conference held on Saturday, October 14, , the morning after STURP ended their historic scientific examination of the Shroud and the day the cloth was returned to its reliquary.
I think the expressions on everyone's faces indicate there was a feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment amongst all those involved. For those who might not know, Prof.
Luigi Gonella was the Scientific Advisor to the Archbishop of Turin in and still held that position ten years later, during the radiocarbon dating of the Shroud.

It is part of a larger curriculum that leads to a Postgraduate Certificate in Shroud Studies. Here is a brief description: This program offers a systematic approach to the intellectual challenges posed by the Shroud of Turin, as well as the opportunity to go deeper into the message that it proposes to the faith and to the heart of believers.
Historically, I teach my course in English while a translation into Italian was being recorded in real time. Since this is a postgraduate course, certain academic requirements must be met to obtain accreditation, but there is an option to just audit the classes if you prefer.
To do so, students are only required to complete the courses and conferences, after which they will receive a certificate of attendance.

The focus of this year's meeting was radiocarbon dating and the CIS delegates met at the conference hall of the Diocese of Chambery and gave a series of reflections on the dating of the Shroud, thirty years from the results obtained with the Carbon 14 method.
Speakers included ENI chemist, Dr. Marco Ricci , who provided the basic elements for understanding the procedure, Dr.
Marco Riani of the University of Parma, with a robust statistical analysis on the 14 C dating by the three laboratories to which the task was officially assigned.
However, when the dates were announced I realized that I would be in the air and flying to Rome to teach my course at the Ateneo Pontificio Regina Apostolorum on May 5th, the first day of the meeting.

There have been many new papers and articles published in the past six months and we are including a number of them here.
Boi - Archaeometry, First published 03 May In the dorsal image of the cloth, the crucifixion position shows the left foot on top of the right one; in the frontal view, the feet are almost parallel.
The nail used in the crucifixion was driven through the foot. The goofy acting actually adds rather takes away from the film and as for the script errors - well, nobody complained about how Rick's raincoat suddenly dried up after reading Elsa's letter in "Casablanca".
In fact, it is so unremittingly intense that Raimi had to make its sequel considerably lighter in tone. Watching "Evil Dead" made me discover all the hidden nuances that I didn't see the first time I saw.
The supposedly "dumb" characters that Raimi created was intentional - unlike most slasher films, that lazily goes through the motions to set up a character's death, the way Raimi sets up these characters' mistakes and inevitable demises has weight because he shows us how a minor foolish action could have severe ramifications.
Take, for example, the scene where Cheryl is raped by the trees in the forest. The scene is shocking in its gleeful violence, but the aftermath gives it weight.
Cheryl tells her friends the experience, but none of them believe her. This subsequently leads to a chilling scene involving a deck of cards where a demonically possessed Cheryl goes berserk and stabs Linda with a pencil, which in turns leads to her possession.
Thus we find out the motivation behind such sequences - small human errors leads to large ramifications to all the characters involved and it becomes an endless cycle until one character is left standing.
If there is an argument where less is more, then "Evil Dead" is truly the model of that argument. The way Sam Raimi builds scenes for the inevitable scare and the gruesome murder now strikes me as impressive enough, but the methods he used to make the film bigger is astonishing given the film's pathetic budget.
The claustrophobic sets, the drearily grainy imagery and the dark shadows lurking outside the cabin and in that dreaded cellar add to the horror, creating a frightening experience for viewers who want to get out but are trapped inside much like the film's ill-fated characters.
Watching it on Blu-Ray, however, I understood the director's intentions. The 16mm camerawork of "Evil Dead" is extremely effective in capturing the grit and violent imagery on film.
In that sense, Raimi's challenge in overcoming all kinds of deficiencies that would have been solved by a few extra million dollars benefits rather than takes away from the picture.
As far as the goofy acting is concerned, I have another confession: First time I saw it, I didn't like it. But watching it again made me rethink my opinions.
Far from an example of bad acting; the "dumb characters" now strikes me as comic relief and their goofiness even adds to the gallows humor to the seemingly scary sequences.
One of the best moments comes when a possessed Cheryl grabs Ash by the throats, which leads to Ash whining at the demons for tormenting him.
Suddenly, he turns away to see one of Ash's possessed friends gleefully declare, "We're gonna get you". It's a wonderful sequence that's both funny and scary at the same time.
On my first viewing, I was underwhelmed by the film given the hype. Watching it on Blu-Ray made me want to stab a pencil on my ankle for not realizing the film's brilliance.
The Blu-Ray enhances the experience even further, providing an exceptionally grainy video remember, this was shot on 16mm and a rousing Dolby True HD 5.
As for the bonus features, unfortunately I bought the bare-bones Blu-Ray version that only contains the audio commentary track recommended for those who want to make films with minimal production values , but there is a limited edition out there that contains a DVD disc featuring numerous supplements.
Either way, don't even think of starting your horror collection without this great picture. Prime Video Verified Purchase. The beginning of the greatest cult classic series and now the Ash vs the Evil Dead series.
Filmed in my hometown of Morristown, TN. This is one of my favorite horror movies from the early 80's time era.
For a low budget film, I really liked this one a lot, and far much better than the new re-make version of the film. I like this one the best out of part 2 and Army Of Darkness too.
Those seemed to be getting a little too much comical more than anything, where I found this one to be way more seriously taken. Bruce Campbell does a great job in this film, along with the rest.
Great film, good acting, nice translation to Blu-ray disc, and at an affordable price. As computer architecture advanced, it became more difficult to compare the performance of various computer systems simply by looking at their specifications.
Therefore, tests were developed that allowed comparison of different architectures. For example, Pentium 4 processors generally operated at a higher clock frequency than Athlon XP or PowerPC processors, which did not necessarily translate to more computational power; a processor with a slower clock frequency might perform as well as or even better than a processor operating at a higher frequency.

There is a huge backlog of material that I have included in this update, so let's get started. The above never-before published photograph was taken at the press conference held on Saturday, October 14, , the morning after STURP ended their historic scientific examination of the Shroud and the day the cloth was returned to its reliquary.
I think the expressions on everyone's faces indicate there was a feeling of satisfaction and accomplishment amongst all those involved.

Sadly, so much time has passed since some of their deaths that a full memorial would be somewhat awkward and untimely, so we are simply listing them here with a brief summary of their contributions.
We extend our deepest sympathies and condolences to the familes and friends of those who passed. I am deeply saddened to report that our dear friend and colleague, Robert Villarreal of Los Alamos, New Mexico, passed away on March 8, after a long battle with Parkinson's disease.
He is best known in Shroud circles for heading a team of eight colleagues at Los Alamos National Laboratory that verified and confirmed the observations of Ray Rogers regarding the anomalous nature of the radiocarbon dating sample.
We are including several excerpts here:. He became a key participant in the research of the Shroud of Turin. Using his skills in analytical chemistry and research, he became internationally known as a speaker and researcher in the study of the Shroud.
